Mike played baseball on a Wednesday. By Saturday, he was on a surgical table, his knees hitting heaven's grass just as the defibrillator shocked him back. This is his NDE journey.

My name is Mike McKenzie. I was raised in Lodi, California. I was brought up in a Christian home. Just figured that that was the way kind of everybody was raised. But I never really took my religion or God or Jesus really seriously. Got married, raised four kids uh in Central Valley in California. Raised them, uh, tried to bring them to church as much as possible because I thought it was important for them. Um, just didn't really mean a lot to me. Um and I spent a good 40 years or so just going down that path. When my oldest son got married, we traveled about five hours away from our home. He got married in Ventura, California. And so we got there a couple days early. I played a little baseball with my two younger boys in the park and um did a lot of you know swinging of the baseball bat that I wasn't normally used to doing. And that night I started feeling sick and I thought, gosh, you know, I feel like I'm getting the flu. Thursday, I started feeling a lot worse. We met the bride's family. We spent a lot of time with them, um, you know, just seeing the sights, going out to dinner and stuff. Uh Friday, we had the rehearsal dinner, and uh, man, by then I was really sick. And I thought, gosh, something's wrong. So after the rehearsal dinner, my son, my the one that was getting married, is in the medical field, and we were sitting at the hotel bar having a glass of wine, and he says, Hey, uh Art, did you have your appendix out? Because it sounds like it might have, you know, your appendix might have ruptured. And I said, Well, no, but uh, it's not my appendix. I mean, I don't have that point tenderness, you know, where you poke on your belly and it and it hurts. I just felt like I was getting the flu. But by then I was I was running a temperature. Later that night I checked my temperature, it was 104. So I knew something was wrong. Friday night before the wedding, I didn't sleep at all. I mean, I was in so much pain, uh, just thinking still that I that I just had the flu, not not belly pain or anything, just thinking that I still was just getting the flu, but I was miserable. So we get through the the wedding, the the the reception, all that. It just went great. The wedding was beautiful. And I thought after the wedding was over, I gotta go get checked out. So I told my son we're gonna head out and go to the hospital. So I get to an emergency room, of course, Saturday night, the hospital's packed. I had to wait about an hour and a half. When they finally got me back to to triage, the nurse lays me on the table and she's poking around on my stomach and she's asking what my symptoms are. She taps the bottom of my feet one at a time. One side, she taps the bottom of my foot and she says, Does that hurt? And I said, No. And, you know, I'm thinking, What is what is she doing this for? And she taps the other foot. Can't remember if it was right or left, but she tapped the other foot, and I had pain in my abdomen and it and that made me scream. And she goes, she says, Okay, yeah, that's your appendix. I'm gonna call in a surgeon. And she says, Have you done any unusual physical activity in the last couple of couple of days? And I thought, well, Wednesday, yeah, I was playing baseball, and that's about the time I got sick. So I told her that. And she like the expression on her face changed. She looked at me, she goes, Wednesday? And she's she she counts out, she goes, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. That's over three days ago. She says, uh, if your appendix ruptured, you're in a little trouble here. We need to get this surgeon in here quick. So they draw blood and they do some other tests, and surgeon comes in. Couldn't have been more than half an hour later. So they wheel me down the hall. I say goodbye to my wife. Uh they burst open the surgical doors, they slide me over from the gurney to the surgical table, and before they put a mask on me, before they give me anything in in the IV, I look to my right, and Jesus walks through the door. And this is like the surgeon walking in to do surgery. I mean but it was Jesus. He's wearing a white robe, he had dark hair, about shoulder length, a little past, a short beard, and his eyes were the most beautiful dark green, blue, greenish blue eyes I've ever seen. And when his eyes looked into my eyes, he looked into my soul. And people have asked me before, how'd you know it was Jesus? Uh I just knew. I mean, I immediately knew it was Jesus. And he walks up to me and he holds out his hand and he says, I want to answer your prayer. I ended up taking his hand. As soon as I touched his hand, we were standing on the top of a hill. And I remember looking down, I still was wearing a hospital gown, and I'm a physical person still too, just like he is. And I'm looking at the ground, I feel these the grass below my feet, and it's like the most beautiful green, perfect grass that I've ever seen. And my senses were heightened to the point where I could count every single blade of grass touching my feet. I knew exactly the number of blades of grass, and I just thought, whoa, this is weird. You know, what's going on here? And everything in front of me was white, like the brightest white I've ever seen. It was blinding. And then all of a sudden, it's like somebody pulled the curtain of white from my right to my left, and it just went right in front of me like this. And all of a sudden, instead of that white, I'm looking at this beautiful scenery. I'm looking down at the grass, which gives way to these little flowers. They almost look like sweet peas, and they were all pastel colors, and they were kind of like swaying back and forth like they were in some wind, but there's no wind. So it was almost like they were dancing. At the bottom of that hill, there's this huge city. I mean, had to be mild crops. But now that white, that that curtain of white that got pulled has now settled on top of this city. So all I can see is these rooftops sticking through. There's like a golden dome, a big golden dome, sort of in the middle. There's other golden domes around there. There's a lot of uh, they look like church steeples, like like bright white buildings, like super bright white. And then there were other smaller golden domes around. And then on the other side of that city, there's this great big mountain, like off in the background. And the mountain is covered with these pine trees, and they have not they don't have pine needles, but they have these like almost like lacy little pine needles, like small tiny pine needles. And I look kind of back towards my right, sort of where Jesus was, and now that it appears like there's this there's this shiny round object, and it's almost like like pearlescent, or or like a giant pearl. It starts sending out these, they look like fluorescent tubes, like fluorescent light tubes, but they're smooth on the end, they're pretty fat, and they're a couple feet long, and they go zipping by me. And one of them actually hits me in the head, and as it hit me, it made this buzzing sound, and it went all the way through me, and it just warmed me like right down to my toes. And I'm just I'm thinking, man, this is so bizarre. Like, what is happening here? And I and I look, and now all of a sudden, those those light beams, at first they were kind of starting out slow as they kind of trickled past my head, and the one that went through me, uh, was going kind of slow. But now they start speeding up and they're going across the valley now over the the city, and one of them hits this the tip of this of one of the trees, and it's like the tip had a diamond on it because it burst into these uh tiny white uh beams, light beams, and there was hundreds of them. And uh the part like above the trees, the there was a sky, and it almost looked like uh like a sunset, but there was no sun, but it was like the most beautiful sunset I've ever seen, and it was like bright reds and oranges and yellows, and above that was like it turned into blues, and there were some clouds, but now those those things are bursting all in front of that uh that beautiful sky, and it's like wow, it was like fireworks going off, they were going off everywhere. It was just this this giant just big show, and I look back where they were coming from, and Jesus is still is still standing there, still holding his hand, and he says to me, It's the glory of the Lord. And man, when he said that, I I fell to my knees. I I got full of emotion. I just you know felt like I was gonna start crying, and I just I was unable to stand, and I fell to my knees, and right when my knees hit the ground, they shocked me and they brought me back. I got a doctor leaning over me with a mask on his face, and he says, Do you know your name? I answered him, but the weird part was I answered him in my mind, thinking that he knew what I was gonna say. Um, and then he asked me again, Do you know your name? And then I realized I didn't verbalize, so I tried to say my name. Of course, my mouth was really dry. Now I'm hot and sweaty again. And uh I said, Mike. And he says, Okay, good. Do you know where you are? And so now I'm thinking, wow, I think I was just in heaven with Jesus, but where am I? Okay, wedding, yeah. I remember the wedding, and then I put it all back together and I told him Ventura. And he says, he says, Okay, good, he's back. And he he turns around and he says that to some people in the in the room. And then when I realized there's like five or six other people, and they were all nurses dressed in blue scrubs, and he says to him, uh, let's get him up to ICU. And I saw somebody putting the paddles back on the on the shock, you know, the shock machine. And um it scared me a little bit, but he said, let's get him back to let's get him up to ICU. So uh they wheeled me up to ICU. I spent four days in ICU and I ended up spending 12 days in the hospital. When I got home, I had um like five or six friends come over, and the guys would sit down with me on the couch and they would they would ask me how I'm doing, you know, they didn't recognize me because I lost like over 30 pounds in 12 days in the hospital. I mean, I was a rail. And uh they would bring me dinner and you know, things that your friends do. And so I would sit down and tell them that story, and you know, for the longest time, I would, I would just ball, I would cry when I would tell that story because it was so emotional. It actually took me three days to tell my wife because I would just break down and cry every time I start telling the story. And so while I'm telling them that story, they're crying right along with me. And then I told them the second part, and this part made me sound crazy. Jesus came back to my hospital room 24 hours later while I was battling pneumonia, and I thought he's here to take me to heaven, and that's why he showed me heaven. When Jesus was in my hospital room, I had this three-hour conversation with him. He's sitting at the end of my bed. I couldn't see him, but I knew he was there. And I had this three-hour conversation with him. When I say a three-hour conversation, I think a lot of people probably misunderstand that. I mean, he didn't come in and undo a scroll and start reading for three hours. You know, it wasn't, he didn't tell me anything crazy about the world's gonna end in in 50 years or anything like that. It was pretty much all to do with my life and the things that he was calling me to do. He said, I'm I'm I'm gonna be asking more of you. I just I didn't know how to take that, you know. So I kept but I kept saying to him, is this real? Are you really here? Is this really happening? But this was so real and transported me to another place. It just it wasn't like I was seeing a ghost. I was touching a human being, a physical person. One of the things that Jesus told me when he had this three-hour conversation is millions of people are gonna hear our story. And I thought, uh-uh, in fact, I said, nope, you got the wrong guy. I'm not doing it. Sorry, not gonna do it. I'm not talking to millions of people. Because if you think about it, like 20 years ago, if you wanted to talk to a bunch of people about Jesus, first of all, I was uncomfortable talking about Jesus anyway. But if you wanted to do that, you had to be Billy Graham. You had to fill up a football stadium full of people to talk to them all, or go on TV. And I thought, that's not me. I'm not Billy Graham. I told Jesus that. I'm not doing it, I'm not Billy Graham. And he just kind of chuckled. And um he talked to me a lot about um things that were going to happen to me, um, valleys I was gonna have to walk through. He said that he had approved all the bad stuff that was coming out. He said, first thing he said to me was I had to get you flat on your back away from all the distractions so you could hear me. I got rid of some of the distractions. I changed jobs because that job was just too stressful. Um, and I just tried to slow down and appreciate the things that I that I saw in that in that NDE. You know, when I when I saw the flowers and the sunset and the sky, I thought, you know, we live in a sinful fallen world here on this earth, but boy, it's still just a beautiful place. And the way creation all works together, it's really amazing. You think about the seasons and and it, you know, something that grows out of the ground that can that can make us healthy and and the bees and it just all of it, just all the way it works together. Man, what a what a creator we we have to come up with this, you know, to just to just make it all work so well together. Slow down, look around your life. I mean, there's so much beauty. We're all under stress, especially in in in my country, in the United States. There's so many distractions. You know, we're all so busy, everybody's trying to do the right thing. There's people raising kids. It's just such a stressful life. And trust me when I say it goes by in the blink of an eye, but just stop and smell the roses, you know, that stupid cliche. I will do that now. I mean, I'll be walking through the the grocery store and I'll stop and smell the roses. You know, I'll I'll look at all the different fruits and vegetables and and I'll grab my phone now and I'll go, wow, that's a weird-looking piece of fruit. Where does that come from? You know, and I'll check into that. And I just have this appreciation for for God's beautiful creation here. Um, I I would I would say, man, that's important for everybody. Just slow down and just appreciate what God has has given us, what God has built for us, even in this, like I've said, a sinful fallen world. Uh we live under the curse of sin, but man, it's just such a cool place, you know, to creation. It's just amazing. So slow down a little bit, spread God's love, you know, be more patient with your fellow man and your and your friends and your family, and get to know your neighbors. I'm here to tell people that Jesus is real. He reached his hand out to me, he's reaching out to you.
